This programme features Director Barry McCaffrey speaking on America's drug problem: where we are and where we've come from. Barry states that drug abuse in America has decreased 50 percent since 1979, cocaine use has decreased 70 percent, and last year adolescent drug use rates decreased 13 percent.
He relates these decreases to the anti-drug coalitions that have been formed by parents, communities, and the government; and the media campaign against drugs broadcast via television, radio, and the internet to millions of Americans in 11 languages. Because of good bi-partisan support in Congress, Barry explains that in the last five budget years support for drug prevention education programmes has increased by 52 percent and support for drug treatment programmes has increased 32 percent.
He discusses drug trends, the latest drugs to entice teenagers, and the anti-drug campaign. He states that he is against the legalization of marijuana. Barry creates the national drug control strategy, sees that it receives approval from the president, and insures there are sufficient funds to have it carried out. He urges parents to not be in denial regarding the issue of drugs and to clearly communicate the message to their children that the use of alcohol and drugs is not acceptable.
