Mandy Straussberg is volunteering at Hillingdale Haven and meets Agnes Riley. (Agnes suffers from a mental illness, but at first she’s convinced that Mandy is someone she knows. When Mandy dismisses this, Agnes says there’s something she has to remember. Mandy is confused, but Agnes just starts painting.
Whit, Tom, and Mandy sort through the journals and piece together the story of Agnes’s past, even while Agnes tells the same story to the truck driver. It all began when Agnes was 10 and met a girl at camp named Jo. The two of them became fast friends and decided to make a pact to meet every year at a tree by the lake. Even as they got older and became adults, they continued their pact and decided to meet every ten years on August 2nd at 6 p.m. Tom figures that through various interruptions, Agnes has missing their yearly meetings for 40 years.
