Sarah Williams is author of Perfectly Human: Nine Months with Cerian. As a wife to Paul and young mom of two daughters, Sarah was thrilled to receive the news of yet another baby. The entire family joined in the excitement. But a hospital scan revealed that the baby had skeletal dysplasia, and the doctor said birth would be fatal. He recommended terminating the pregnancy. Sarah and Paul decided to carry the baby to term, naming her Cerian [KARY-in], which is Welsh for “loved one.” Sarah wanted to give her preborn child as much love as she could in the time that they had. Her decision didn’t go without controversy; she faced anger from some for her choice. The birth was rough, and while Sarah held hope that Cerian would survive, she didn’t. Her body was deformed, but as Sarah says, it was perfectly suited for living inside her for nine months. Sarah says of her baby, “Cerian is not a strong religious principle or a rule that compels me to make hard and fast ethical decisions. She is a beautiful person who is teaching me to love the vulnerable, treasure the unlovely, and face fear with dignity and hope.”
